Today (August 9th) is the one year anniversary of the death of Mike Brown, an African American high schooler who was shot by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. These events sparked protests in the region, as well as across the country, and this death was the start of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
Since then, there has been little to no change in how the United States handles racial based shootings and subsequent police brutality, and other hashtag campaigns have come up, including awareness for #TamirRice, a 12 year old African American child who was shot by police in a playground, and #SandraBland, a current situation where a woman was found dead in her cell after being arrested for a traffic violation.
Today, there is a new hashtag swirling around Twitter.
Christian Taylor, a 19 year old African American college student was shot by a police officer in Dallas Texas on August 7th after allegedly crashing a car through the front window of a car dealership.
Police were on site responding to a call from a security company set to monitor the dealership. In a video released to the public, Taylor is seen running around the dealership, and jumping on a vehicle. Police reports allude to a scuffle, however the video was cut off prior to this. The FBI will be involved in the investigation of this incident.
While other sources are busy dragging Taylor through the mud, as is typical with these cases, one thing has caught the hearts of those tweeting about the case.
Christian Taylor had a twitter account, where he often tweeted about the #BlackLivesMatter movement. As a 19 year old African American college student and football player, he kept abreast of what was happening across the country regarding these cases.
Most notably, Taylor tweeted on July 30th of this year “I don’t wanna die too younggggg.”
This is a stark representation of something that is happening all too often. An African American person was shot by a white police officer. This has happened far too many times this year. This happens far too often.
Christian Taylor was 19. He played football for his university. His father has stated that he would give away the shoes on his feet to those in need.
May he rest in peace.
