The possibility of a meeting between the English rock star and the Russian PM has been discussed at the reunion of one of UK’s most important governmental institutions. What has prompted this has been a declaration that the singer gave last week, in which he mentioned how he wanted to argue with Putin about the latest measures implemented in the country, such as the ‘anti-gay propaganda’ law.
Lord Fowler said that he’s “not sure how far a meeting of that kind is going to take us in follow-up action,” while Lord Scriven has sarcastically said that Elton John could end up being a victim of the Russian laws that he so heavily criticizes “If he says to President Putin, Are You Ready for Love?, again he could find himself in serious trouble.”
Lord Fowler added how a meeting between the celebrity and David Cameron, the English PM, could be much more productive given that “it could start a process whereby the discrimination can be fought and defeated.”
However, as the main issue debated in said reunion was the worsening of LGBTQAI+ rights throughout the world, the banter put the Russian situation over the table. Foreign Office minister Baroness Anelay of St Johns ended up declaring that the UK is supporting the LGBTQAI+ rights campaigners in Russia.
