Lee Mansell and JJ O’Donnell kissed during the recent Bristol Rovers and Gateshead match. It happened as a resolution of a confrontation between them that had sparked during the second half of the match, where the Rovers, Mansell’s team, won. It was a way to avoid “doing something silly”, explained Mansell, the kiss initiator, to BBC Radio Bristol.
As Ragap reports, the referee pulled out a yellow card even though the kiss did manage to stop the escalation of violence, as JJ O’Donnell was left confused and mildly taken aback. “I did it to defuse the situation,” continued Mansell to the BBC, “it’s the first time I’ve been booked for kissing someone”.
Such action earned him the anger of his wife, but the player confirmed to the BBC that everything ended up good and that they “had a laugh and a joke about it with the lads afterwards. It’s another thing to add to the list of daft things I’ve done on the football pitch.”
It surely did spark a reaction in the social networks, most tweets calling it a ‘cheeky kiss’ or referencing how they have forgotten about the mistletoe. BT Sport Football shared a video of the moment.
