The Best Ideas When Designing the Layout of Smaller Gardens

Even the smallest of gardens and outdoor spaces can feel as luxurious and well-designed as a larger, more spacious one, providing the area is designed with the exact dimensions of the space in mind. Small gardens can be transformed into a beautiful haven of tranquility with the right design and planning.

Here are some top ideas when designing the layout of a smaller, more compact garden.

Decide on an Overall Theme

Unlike the luxury of a large space where there can be a variety of different styles and tones within one garden, a smaller space requires more thought and planning into the overall theme.

Decide if you would rather take on a simple, minimalistic, and modern design to your garden or, alternatively, perhaps you favor The Secret Gardenesque vibes of hanging fairy lights, planted solar lights, and wildflowers. Whatever your decision, make sure you set your mind to a particular style that feels right for you, and try not to deviate from this throughout the entirety of the design process.

Objectively and Thoroughly Evaluate the Space

Principally, knowing and taking note of the exact dimensions of your garden is invaluable preparation for when it comes time to start purchasing garden furniture and other features. However, there are a number of other considerations you should bear in mind, such as the quality and type of the soil, any drainage issues, the shape of the corners and how your lawn appears, and if there are any plants or trees that are going to be difficult to remove or relocate.

Keep a Grassy Area (No Matter How Small)

It is strongly advisable, when designing a garden of any size, to still ensure to keep an area of natural grass, no matter how small this area will turn out to be.

There are a wide plethora of advantages to keeping some grass naturally growing in your outdoor space, including the colling effect it produces on hot summer days and the role grass and other plant life play in cleaning the air by removing dust particles and other elements of pollution. Other ways that keeping even a small section of grass will benefit you include an enhanced sense of mental health and wellbeing when spending time in the garden and the natural cleaning process for nearby water sources that grass affords. When working on the space, it is advisable to purchase your landscape gardening tools from a reputable and experienced supplier.

Consider a Calming and Relaxing Small Water Feature

Studies have repeatedly proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the presence of water is incredibly soothing for the mind, body, and soul. Not only that, but the sound of water trickling from a water feature can help with reducing stress levels and even lowering blood pressure. There is a plethora of different styles, sizes, and forms of water features, so you can spend time choosing the right vibe of water feature for you.
