The Key Steps You Need to Take After Deciding to Divorce

Deciding to end a marriage is rarely an easy one, but if you are unhappy or you’re at risk if you stay in the relationship, it is the right thing to do. Choosing to get divorced is the first step toward a happier future, even if it might not feel that way right now. It’s an opportunity to start a new chapter in life and pursue new experiences to help you grow and reconnect with yourself. However, before you can settle and embrace this new start, you must first get the divorce proceedings out of the way, and here are some of the key steps you will need to take to do this.

Consider Your Living Situation

Unless you and your spouse have already gone your separate ways before your decision to get divorced, you will likely still be living under the same roof. Some couples find a way to make sharing a living space work, but a lot find it to be easier and more beneficial if someone moves out. This will allow you both to get some space and start to get used to living away from one another. You may want to sit down and discuss who should leave the marital home, and if that is you, you should start looking for a new place to lease as soon as possible. You might even find that staying with a close friend or relative for a short time can help you get space from your spouse sooner rather than later.

Get a Divorce Solicitor

Once you have made new living arrangements, the next important step to take is to find yourself suitable legal representation. Hiring a divorce solicitor will mean that you have someone who can talk you through these proceedings and fight to make sure that you get what’s fair out of the divorce settlement. They could also assist you with custody issues if you share children with your ex-spouse. These divorce and family solicitors in South Wales are a good example of the kind of firms you should be approaching for this help.

Speak to Your Children

If you do have children, they will also be affected by your decision to get divorced and this can be a confusing and painful time for them, too. If this is possible, sitting down with your ex to break the news of the divorce to your kids together could be a good approach, allowing them to ask any questions that they may have. Reassuring them that they are still loved and that although things will change, it will be OK is also important. Try to keep their routines as normal as possible as well to help them adapt better to the new circumstances.

If you have decided that a divorce is the best decision so that you and your spouse can be happier apart, then make sure you are taking into account these key steps to help the process move forward a little bit easier.
