The Five Most Dangerous Stinging Insects and How to Avoid Them

Whether by a bee, hornet, or even wasp, there is a high chance that everyone has been stung by an insect at one point or the other. Although it varies, the pains from all kinds of stings hurt a lot. In the 1980s, American scientist Dr. Justin O. Schmidt carried out research to determine the severity of stings from up to a hundred insects. This research came up with a system known as The Schmidt Pain Index. The Schmidt Pain Index ranks the pain from insect stings on a scale from 0 to 4. 0 signifies slight pain, while 4 represents severe pains. This pain index has been used to rank the most dangerous stinging insects in the world. Click here to find out more.

  • Paper Wasp: Native to Europe but already finding their way to other parts of the world, paper wasps are ranked 3.0 on the Schmidt Pain Index. The pain that comes from a paper wasp sting is known to have a burning sensation. It has been likened to the sensation that comes from spilled acid on the skin. In addition to this burning sensation, it also leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of the victim. You can avoid paper wasps by removing fruits such as plums, pears, and apples that are laying around your home. This serves as their food source thereby attracting them. In addition, wear less perfume whenever spending a long time outdoor.
  • Red Harvester Ant: The red harvester ant is a very small insect, but the pain that comes from their sting is mighty. They usually inject strong venom into the skin of their victims after a bite. This venom tends to create a painful sensation that feels like a hole is being drilled into your skin. Native to the Southern United States, red harvester ants are very difficult to spot. They usually live in tiny holes in the ground, so be sure to avoid such holes while walking.
  • Warrior Wasp: This is another small insect that causes great pain. Dr. Schmidt described the pain felt from the sting of this wasp as torture. This two-inch wasp is usually found in Central and Southern America. It is best to avoid them as much as possible. If you are stung by a warrior wasp, it is best to contact a doctor immediately.
  • Bullet Ant: The bullet ant is probably the most dangerous stinging insect in the world, as it has a pain index of 4.0+. Also known as the giant hunting ant, the 24-hour ant, and the conga ant, this insect leaves a throbbing and burning sensation. If you are stung by this insect, it is best to seek medical attention right away.
  • Tarantula Hawk: This is another insect that has a sting with a 4.0 rank on the Schmidt Pain Index. It is a 2-inch long wasp with a 7mm venom-filled stinger. Only behind the bullet ant, the tarantula hawk is the second most painful stinging pest in the world. They are usually found in desert regions.

If you come across any of these insects in your environment, it is important to contact a pest control company as soon as possible.
